Many simply enjoy the underlying task of managing the information. It's just a bonus that they or others might find that data to also be *useful* and/or valuable. Compare it to playing video games. People spend a lot of time doing that for no practical gain. They may even spend large sums of money on crates/emotes/whatever. Sometimes people will sell game items/currency for real money, too. I used to play games more when I was younger.
