Big is the new Small
I’m always thinking of new ways to reduce my resource usage here at Impossibly Stupid HQ. Today, I got it in my mind to hunt for some IPv6-only hosting; I’ve cut things down so much on this tiny server that I was wondering if I could get rid of IPv4, too. I went looking around at what deals could be had in the market and stumbled across this special my current provider (RamNode) has had running for nearly two months and I had no idea about it, and it is over in just two days:
| Plan | RAM / VSwap | CPU | IPv4 | IPv6 | Storage | Bandwidth | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2GB SVZS | 2048 / 256 MB | 2 Cores | 1 | /64 | 60 GB | 2000 GB | $18 / yr |
For reference, that’s 16x the RAM, 2x the CPUs, 5x the SSD, and 4x the bandwidth of my current server. And it’s only $3/year more? I really don’t need it, but I could not resist! My only hope is that I’ll find some project over the winter that can truly make use of it.
And the little experiment that kicked off this journey still chugs along. This will lighten its load considerably. With any luck, that means I’ll once again be able to keep it doing useful things well into the future, which I think is amazing for such a modest machine in this day and age. I know it can’t last forever, though, and it’ll be a sad day when that experiment comes to an end.
